In times of tradition
There's something about the holiday and festive season that sparkles the eye of even the most dour person. You spend quality time with friends, family and get to celebrate the year that was, and the year that will be. You discuss future plans and new year's resolutions over broken bread and full cups. You get to participate in your favourite holiday traditions. You get to participate in very special and secret events that have developed and evolved over time. They are the most sacred and memorable events of the season.
Nothing better than a hat that doesn't fit and a terrible joke |
There is something special about holiday traditions. What starts as a single moment in time evolves into a whispered copy played out over years. A tradition is a continued replication of some of the best times of our lives. But unfortunately a lot of people are too stead-fast in tradition. If it’s not exactly the same, it ceases to be fun. To these people I would say, let your traditions evolve. There can be nothing better than booking a restaurant for the wrong date and finding a new hidden gem. Nothing better than playing a different game, or including different people in a secret activity. As long as the essence of the tradition is the same, evolution over time is natural. Explore new paths and keep your inner child’s curiosity alive.
It doesn't matter which path you take when you fly a helicopter |
As always, it is the gift of giving that makes something special. Although it seems counter-intuitive, I believe the best thing you can do is share your traditions with the world. Spread the love. Remember why your traditions are good, and how they make you feel. Do they light up your sense of smell as you enjoy your favourite family recipe? Is it that tree bend that you see before your favourite campground? Is it the smell of the sea breeze as you take your boat out? You can access your favourite traditions in your mind by simply being mindful of what it is that makes them so amazing. I can see you smiling already.
Stay healthy, happy, and hopeful |
I’d like to wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas. I hope you all get to actively participate in those holiday traditions you love. I hope that you also start new traditions, whether with friends, family or even by yourself. Everyday we work towards a better version of ourselves. Happy holidays.
This year will be extra special to spend with children you dont see often enough. And i will try and win some games
