Work Zodiac: Generalist or Specialist
In nature, there is a cyclical flow of evolution that creates two main categories of species: specialists and generalists. In any population, species will continuously evolve until they become the ultimate specialists, and drive themselves to extinction because they are now no longer able to adapt to changing environments. Generalists are incredibly adaptable and will fill any niche presented to them as best they can, where they often evolve into brand new species (into specialists). When working, it can be beneficial to understand your working style, and that of your colleagues.
Both good for different reasons |
In a commercial setting, a specialist is the person who is the go-to for a certain topic. They are the individuals that know all of the relevant information, and can do what needs to be done. They are dependable, and so there are high expectations that they will deliver. Specialists are thorough and diligent. When dealing with specialists, make sure to be direct. As the expert, allow them to take charge on matters they are familiar with but be sure to keep them on-track. Specialists require vision and direction as they can get side-tracked easily.

The generalist, on the other hand, is the person that people lean on. It’s the individual that can provide guidance and counselling, but who is unable to give definitive answers immediately. They are the directors, the people who know where to look and who to talk to. They draw on their experience across a vast range of sectors and roles to understand the big picture. As a generalist, they need to ally with specialists. They draw on others for information and problem-solving. The trade-off for the generalist is that they must always be available to others.

It's very important that both types of workers understand the limitations and expectations of their specific style. It’s good to have a variation in teams, in order to alleviate bottlenecks. Not enough specialists leave generalists clueless, and not enough generalists leave specialists without direction. When thinking about your work zodiac, understand what limitations your style may have on your role and what your role expects. Does your style suit the role you’re currently in? Should you look for a mentor of the opposite style or do you want to improve on your own strengths? Everyone will generally be a blend of both styles, but one will always shine through.
I am the generalist and survive and achieve as I am surrounded by great specialist.
