Get some rest

It’s common to feel like you need a holiday after your holidays. When we get a good break from work we usually spend it working our way through a list of to-do’s, to fix, to-see’s, and where-to-be’s. It can be hard to feel properly rested. But you shouldn’t feel like you need to take a few extra days to recover from what should be your recovery period.

It’s important that we reflect on what allows us to feel rested, and how we can get into that place as quickly as possible. Do we need to sit in nature for a few hours? Do we need a quiet walk? A quiet place? Do we need to see our friends for a board game or a brainstorm? We each uniquely recharge by things in our own way. It’s important to work out what works best for you and to actively schedule them when you can, especially towards the end of the break period. Focus on essential work early in your holiday, so you have ample time to fill up your internal tank towards the end.

To some, a good rest really does mean rest. Make sure you have your own cozy spot, somewhere safe and familiar. When it comes to rest, be selfish. Don’t burn the candle at both ends. You don’t need to wait until you’re at zero before thinking about yourself. Rest is an important part of our physical and mental growth, giving the body and mind the time it needs to repair, bridge new mental connections, refocus and recover. Make time for rest, and treat with the same focus you do the rest of your training.
