Don't finish last, finish always

The start of the year has got me thinking about all the projects I wish to start. All the new, exciting things that I want to try. All the new ideas to take action on. But what I should be focusing on is finishing projects. It’s easy to start new things, much harder to finish them. There’s so much to learn that comes from finishing a project. So much that you gain from cutting that final ribbon. It’s much easier to leave things unfinished and to shift your attention to the new and shiny.

We learn so much when we finish something. We discover which plans were well laid, and which resulted in our project coming crashing down at the final test. Decisions come quickly under the pressure of crescendo. Does everything add up? Does the bridge meet in the middle? There’s no point in laying foundations if you never get to enjoy the final product. There is a deep learning that can only come from finishing.

Did someone at the museum set this up for a laugh?

A finished project is a starting step. You have a starting point to reflect from, and to rebuild if needed. When you finish what you start, you give yourself a chance to completely close that project off in your mind. You can focus wholly on the next, the bigger and the better. All of the achievement, celebration and excitement comes with the end. It doesn’t matter how you get there, as long as you make it to the finish line.
